autonomous trucking graphicThis is a preview of a research report from BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about BI Intelligence, click here.

Trucking is set to transform radically in the coming years, with innovative technologies enabling trucks to take over more and more driving responsibilities, saving time and money for operators and businesses that rely on shipping.

Autonomous trucks are being tested on roads around the world, and systems from startups like Peloton and Embark could make their way into commercial trucks as soon as next year. Fleets will be able to leverage autonomous technologies to cut costs and gain a critical edge over competitors.

But to start planning for, and to eventually implement, those technologies, companies need to know what sorts of systems will be ready and when, and what regulatory hurdles will need to be overcome to get autonomous trucks on the road.

In a new report from BI Intelligence, we provide an early glimpse into the emerging autonomous trucking market. First, we look at the trucking market as it stands today, offering a basic profile of the industry and highlighting a number of the challenges and issues it faces. Then, we go through the three waves of autonomous technology that are set to upend the industry — platooning, semi-autonomous systems, and fully autonomous trucks — looking at who is making strides in each of these areas, when the technology can be expected to start making an impact, and what companies can do to get ahead of the curve.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Advanced and autonomous technology will enable operators and shipping firms to eradicate some of the challenges that have long plagued them. Trucks will take over more and more driving responsibilities, saving time and money for operators and businesses that rely on shipping.
  • The impact of autonomous technologies on the trucking industry will come in three major waves: platooning or fuel-saving vehicle convoys, semi-autonomous highway control systems, and fully autonomous trucks.
  • Change to the trucking industry will be gradual but inexorable. Companies with foresight can start to make long-term plans to account for the ways that autonomous technologies will change how goods and products move from place to place.

In full, the report:

  • Analyzes the development of autonomous trucking technology.
  • Explains the waves in which advanced and autonomous technologies will start to impact the trucking industry, providing detailed explanations of how a company can take advantage of the disruptive technology transforming logistics at each stage.
  • Profiles the efforts of the companies that are at the forefront of new technology in trucking, looking at what they're working on and when their efforts could start to impact the market.

George Papadopoulos tweets offer at Comey: Testify publicly and I’ll withdraw my request for immunity

George Papadopoulos

  • George Papadopoulos, a former adviser to President Donald Trump's campaign, called for former FBI director James Comey to publicly testify about the FBI's purported mishandling of the Russia investigation.
  • Papadopoulos' tweets came after House Republicans subpoenaed Comey and former attorney general Loretta Lynch to appear before lawmakers in a closed-door session.
  • But Comey has already been pushing for an open hearing.
  • Papadopoulos earlier wanted immunity to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee, but said Saturday that he'll withdraw his request if Comey testifies publicly.

George Papadopoulos, the former foreign-policy aide to President Donald Trump's campaign who pleaded guilty in the Russia investigation last year, took to Twitter on Saturday to call for the former FBI director, James Comey, to testify publicly about the FBI's purported mishandling of the Russia probe.

"If Jim Comey wants to testify in public and tell America who/why in Trump’s advisory board was under FISA; who Joseph Mifsud is; if the FBI had any role in my dealings with Charles Tawil; and explain the UK and Australia’s surveillance role," he tweeted, "that would be good for the country."

But Comey has been asking to testify publicly from the start.

Earlier this week, House Republicans — who will be a minority in the lower chamber of Congress come January — made a last-minute push to subpoena Comey and former attorney general Loretta Lynch.

Comey acknowledged the news Thursday, tweeting, "Happy Thanksgiving. Got a subpoena from House Republicans. I'm still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a 'closed door' thing because I've seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion. Let's have a hearing and invite everyone to see."

Democrats have also called for an open hearing, though Republicans are pushing for a closed-door session as they continue their investigation into whether the FBI allowed anti-Trump bias to affect its handling of the ongoing Russia investigation.

James Comey

Papadopoulos, meanwhile, reportedly wanted immunity in exchange for testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Legal experts said the request indicated the former Trump aide may be worried his testimony could implicate him in a crime.

But Papadopoulos backed away from his request Saturday.

"If Jim Comey agrees to answer the below questions in a public testimony, I will agree to testify to the senate without immunity," Papadopoulos tweeted. "It’s a win-win for the country. America first."

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to one count of lying to the FBI last year and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. At his sentencing hearing in September, he expressed remorse for his actions, saying he was "grateful" for the opportunity to help the investigation and had "nothing but respect for the Court and the legal process."

But the former Trump aide soon adopted a very different tone.

After his sentencing hearing, Papadopoulos tweeted that the FBI's investigation was "the biggest case of entrapment!" The next day, Papadopoulos said he was considering withdrawing his guilty plea because he believed he was framed.

Several days later, he tweeted that he had been sentenced "while having exculpatory evidence hidden from me."

He added that if he had known that at the time, he never would have pleaded guilty. And on November 9, Papadopoulos tweeted that his "biggest regret" was pleading guilty.

He has since deleted those tweets.

Robert Mueller

Papadopoulos hired new lawyers in September as he and his wife took to Twitter and the media to promote the unfounded theory that he was entrapped by the FBI, who he said wanted to "infiltrate" and "sabotage" the Trump campaign.

Earlier this month, Papadopoulos' former defense lawyers filed a motion pulling out from representing him.

DOJ veterans pointed out that it's unusual for lawyers to file paperwork to formally withdraw from a case.

Elie Honig, a former prosecutor from the Southern District of New York who specialized in organized-crime cases, said it was likely that Papadopoulos' "lawyers are trying to disassociate with him because of the conspiracy theories he's spreading, or perhaps they told him to knock it off, and he's not listening."

If Papadopoulos is seriously considering withdrawing his guilty plea, he would have to show a judge he was somehow misled or coerced into pleading guilty, and that the plea was not fully voluntary. On a practical level, that would set a defendant up to argue that his lawyers didn't explain the full terms of the plea correctly or lied to him.

In that case, Papadopoulos' lawyers may also have withdrawn because they'd no longer be able to represent him due to a conflict of interest.

Withdrawing a guilty plea is extraordinarily difficult. And if Papadopoulos does succeed, he may find himself in deeper trouble than he was in before because his indictment would resurface and he would not have the option of pleading guilty with an agreement to cooperate.

The US and Mexico are reportedly close to a deal that would turn Mexico into a 'waiting room for America’s asylum system'

mexico border wall

  • The US is reportedly close to reaching a deal with Mexico that would allow for asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims are processed.
  • The plan appears to be an attempt to end the practice of "catch and release."
  • If successfully reached, it will reportedly be implemented in a matter of weeks.

The White House and Mexican officials from the country's incoming administration are reportedly close to a deal that would turn Mexico into "a waiting room for America’s asylum system," according to a report from The Washington Post.

The deal would place migrants seeking asylum in the US in Mexico while they await judgment by US courts, according to Mexcian officials and members of president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s transition team.

The plan, dubbed Remain in Mexico, appears to be President Donald Trump's solution to "catch and release," the American policy that has allowed asylum seekers from Mexico and Central America refuge on American soil until their cases are decided.

Olga Sánchez Cordero, Mexico’s incoming interior minister, indicated to the Post that the decision to go along with the plan was part of an effort disincentivize continued migration from Central America.

"Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine, one caravan after another after another, that would also be a problem for us," Cordero said.

The deal, which has not been signed or officiated, reportedly took shape last week between Mexican officials, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

When reached for comment, White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said, "President Trump has developed a strong relationship with the incoming Obrador Administration, and we look forward to working with them on a wide range of issues."

The reported plan, which would be implemented within the next few weeks if it's successfully reached, is one of the latest attempts by the Trump administration to stop or slow the flow of Central American migrants coming to the US who are fleeing gang violence and poor economic conditions.

In the last few months, Trump has ramped up his rhetoric and actions against immigrants. He's particularly targeted the migrant caravan moving toward the US border that is now encamped in Tijuana.

In an executive order, Trump authorized the US military to use "lethal force" against migrants if they engage in violence against border officers. And as he escalated his anti-immigrant rhetoric leading up to the November midterms, Trump also sent nearly 6,000 troops to the border ahead of the caravan's arrival.

On Monday, a federal judge ruled against Trump's order that sought to deem asylum applications from individuals who didn't enter the US at a port of entry ineligible.

The ACLU didn't address whether it is considering suing the administration over Trump's order. But Lee Gelernt, an attorney for the organization, told the Post, "Leaving asylum seekers stranded in Mexico will put them in danger. The Trump administration should focus on providing a fair and lawful asylum process in the US rather than seeking more ways to undermine it."

Microsoft's new Surface Pro 6 is the best hybrid laptop you can buy — but there's a catch that's a deal breaker for some people

surface pro

  • Microsoft has been building itself up as a serious competitor in the PC hardware business, and so far, it's been doing a pretty great job.
  • The Surface Pro 6 is the latest and greatest in the company's Surface Pro line, but does it really live up to the name?
  • We tested out the tablet and were impressed with the impressive specs, including a strong core processor and a lot of storage space, though we think the design could still be updated to include a USB-C port or two.

Microsoft has been slowly but surely building itself up as a serious competitor in the PC hardware business, and so far, it's been doing a pretty great job. Recent products include the likes of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2, which we recently reviewed, as well as the Microsoft Surface Go, which we recently tested as well.

It all started, however, with the original Microsoft Surface Pro, which was arguably the first product that showed the world Microsoft could truly compete in hardware. These days, Microsoft is up to the Surface Pro 6, the latest and greatest in the Surface Pro line. But does the new Surface Pro 6 live up to the Surface Pro name? We put it to the test to find out.

As with any new product, the first thing you'll notice about the new Surface Pro is its design, and it's a great-looking device — but not all that different-looking compared to previous iterations of the Surface Pro. In fact, if you put the Surface Pro 6 next to the Surface Pro 5, or even the Surface Pro 4, you'd be hard-pressed telling them apart — save for the fact that this time around there's a Matte Black color option.

On the front of the device, you'll find the 12.3-inch touchscreen, along with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with support for Windows Hello. On the left side, there's a headphone jack, while the right side is where you'll find the full-sized USB port, mini DisplayPort, and Surface Connect charging port. On the top, there's the power button and volume rocker. Then, on the back, there's the kickstand. Despite what it may look like in photos, the kickstand is very sturdy and infinitely adjustable — so you don't have to live with using the device in one of two positions, like when you use the iPad with Apple's keyboard covers. Like other tablet kickstand-style devices, the Surface Pro 6 isn't overly comfortable to use like a laptop with the Type Cover on your lap — so if you intend on buying the Type Cover, we recommend sticking with a table of some kind.

surface pro 6 2

The only thing we might have changed about the Surface Pro 6 design is that it would have been nice to include a USB-C port or two.

Apple has run full-force into adopting USB-C— causing some outrage. We get that Microsoft is positioning itself as a kind of anti-Apple by not forcing users to adopt dongles for older accessories, but USB-C is still the future, and not adding a USB-C port immediately dates the Surface Pro 6.

As mentioned, the display on the Surface Pro 6 comes in at 12.3-inches, and it has a resolution of 2,736 x 1,824 — and it's beautiful. Sure, it's pretty much the same as the display on last year's Surface Pro 5, but that doesn't take away from the fact that colors were vibrant and bright, making the Surface Pro 6 a great choice for those who appreciate a great display. The display is excellent when it comes to touch features too. We found it to be accurate and responsive to touch, and while you might want to use the Surface Pro Type Cover for some situations — like writing tech reviews — many will find using the on-screen keyboard and touch controls perfectly adequate for what they need this device for.

Under the hood, the Surface Pro 6 is an impressive beast for the form factor that it takes.

The base model includes an 8th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. From there, options range up to an Intel Core i7 with 16GB of RAM and a full 1TB of storage. Of course, with those specs you'll have to pay $2,299, but it's an option if you want it.

We found that our model, which was the base model with a 256GB hard drive, was more than capable enough of handling any day-to-day tasks and could get us through a full day of work, plus some video-watching and other entertainment, perfectly fine. Of course, if you expect to use the Surface Pro 6 for more intensive tasks, like any video or audio editing, then it's worth upgrading.

Beyond shelling out the cash for the tablet itself, there's some extra money you might want to spend — on the Microsoft Type Cover, which comes at $130, and the Microsoft Surface Pen, which costs $100. Those are expensive accessories. Sure, they're not quite as pricey as Apple's options, but they're expensive nonetheless.

Screen_Shot_2018 10 09_at_9.35.46_AM_b3dg ss_xqtl 7o

Now, this isn't a review of the Surface Pro's accessories, but we can offer a few details.

In general, we found the Surface Pro 6's Type Cover to offer a nice, tactile typing experience — which was perfect for longer typing sessions. The touchpad was also nice, and while it could have been a bit larger, it worked perfectly fine. The Type Cover is only available in black if you want to pay the $130, though if you're willing to shell out $160 you can get a Platinum, Cobalt Blue, or Burgundy model too.

The Surface Pro Pen is pretty nice too. Now, take this with a grain of salt considering the fact that this tech reviewer isn't much of an artist, but the Surface Pro Pen generally felt nice and reacted well to our strokes. It has 4,096 levels of pressure, which is nice, though it would have been nice if it had a little more gesture control, like the new second-generation Apple Pencil.

Ultimately, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is an excellent device and a great option for Windows fans who want to continue their experience in a more portable and tactile format. We do recommend the Type Cover to those who type a lot, but if you don't then you may not need to factor it into the cost.

But the question remains — is there a better option in this price range?

Well, that depends.

For Windows 10 fans, the Surface Pro line is still the best way to experience the hybrid tablet design that has taken off over the past few years, but we still wish Microsoft would update the design a little, even if just to include more modern ports.

For those not married to Windows 10 and who don't mind using a mobile operating system, the new iPad Pro range is definitely something to consider, especially given the fact that it has a USB-C port and arguably better stylus. iPad aside, however, there's still nothing that can truly challenge the Surface Pro 6 in this segment — so if you like Windows 10, and want a hybrid, this is the way to go.

When I'm browsing for gifts, Amazon is admittedly not the site where I expect to easily stumble across an option that I've never seen before or regard as cool. I tend to think that the new and interesting startups have a leg up in this regard. Since Amazon is so familiar to shop, however, an ideal situation would be for me to knock out all my holiday shopping at once there.

It may be a convenient place to shop for ordinary and practical needs like kitchen tools and organization products, but is it really the best place to find unique gifts for your friends and family? This guide of 22 unique gifts, all available on Amazon, presents a compelling case.

Brooklinen's only sale of the year is going on through Cyber Monday — here's how to save up to 20% on sheets and bedding

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Brooklinen, $225

  • Brooklinen is having its biggest and only sale of the year right now.
  • Now through November 26 (Cyber Monday), the more you spend, the more you'll save — up to 20% off orders of $450 or more.
  • We ranked Brooklinen as the makers of the best luxury sheets, the best sateen sheets, and the best duvet cover on the internet. Find the startup's seven best-sellers below.
  • To potentially save more on Cyber Monday, you can visit Business Insider Coupons to find up-to-date promo codes for a range of online stores.

Brooklinen is one of our favorite brands to cover — from its core and luxe bedsheets to its latest Brooklittles line for babies and toddlers. However, it's not known for holding sales. Prices are usually low enough to warrant what is essentially a year-round sale in itself.

But Black Friday and Cyber Monday are exceptions; Cyber Week is its biggest and only sale of the year.

This year, the popular startup is offering steep discounts. Now through November 26, you can take advantage of the following deals:

If you're looking for a new pair of sheets, or you've been waiting for an additional discount as an excuse to try out luxury bedding, this is probably the best time of the year to invest. And in terms of value per dollar, Brooklinen is a particularly great deal.

They look great, feel even better, and can vastly improve your quality of sleep — which, in turn, improves quite a few other areas of your life. When six hours feels like eight, it's easier to operate in the way that you want in your day-to-day.

You can check out its full range of options here, but we're fans of the Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle for every day (with a duvet cover, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and four pillowcases for $228 if you're buying for a queen). Insider Picks editor Ellen Hoffman described them as one of the best purchases she's ever made.

In our comprehensive Buying Guides, we ranked Brooklinen sheets the #1 best luxurious sheets and the best sateen sheets you can buy. Its Down Comforter (queen, $349) is the best we found from a startup, and its Classic Duvet Cover (queen, $109) is another best-in-its-category on the internet. It also makes great, blanket-sized towels (Bath Sheets, two for $89).

If you're looking for something that adds some warmth and softness for the designated "cozy" winter season, I can't recommend the Twill Hardcore Sheet Bundle (queen, $189) enough. It's made to feel like your favorite worn-in flannel, and the twill fabrication allows the yarns to move more freely, creating an overall more forgiving, softer experience. As I've mentioned in my review of them, they'll make you wake up and wish you were working from home every day.

When it comes to Brooklinen, our experience is that it's pretty difficult to go wrong.

Take advantage of Cyber Monday Brooklinen discounts here.

'All will stay in Mexico': Trump says the US will bar asylum-seekers from entering the country until judges approve their claims

caravan migrants us-mexico border

  • President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday that asylum-seekers won't be allowed to enter the United States until their claims are approved in court.
  • The move would mean that migrants will be forced to wait in Mexico while their asylum cases are processed.
  • Mexican government officials on Saturday night denied that any agreement on the arrangement has been struck.
  • The news comes as nearly 5,000 migrants from the Central American caravan wait in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, where they intend to cross into the US.

President Donald Trump on Saturday tweeted that the United States will no longer allow asylum-seekers to enter the country until their claims are already approved by a judge, essentially confirming an earlier report that said migrants may be forced to wait in Mexico while their cases wind through the US court system.

"Migrants at the Southern Border will not be allowed into the United States until their claims are individually approved in court," he tweeted, adding that "we only will allow those who come into our Country legally," though asylum-seekers often do legally enter the country at ports of entry before requesting asylum.

The incoming Mexican government, however, has denied that a deal has been struck.

"There is no agreement of any sort between the incoming Mexican government and the U.S. government," Olga Sánchez Cordero, Mexico's incoming interior minister, told the Associated Press in a statement.

The news comes as nearly 5,000 migrants from the Central American caravan wait in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, following a roughly month-long journey that began in Honduras in mid-October.

Read moreThe first group of caravan migrants has reached the US border while thousands of others lag behind — here's what awaits them when they arrive

The migrant caravans have become a frequent target for Trump's ire, particularly during the 2018 midterm elections, when Trump and his conservative allies campaigned on a border crackdown.

"Our very strong policy is Catch and Detain. No 'Releasing' into the U.S.," Trump tweeted Saturday. "All will stay in Mexico. If for any reason it becomes necessary, we will CLOSE our Southern Border. There is no way that the United States will, after decades of abuse, put up with this costly and dangerous situation anymore!"

caravan migrants

Trump's tweets came hours after The Washington Post reported that a preliminary deal was struck between the Trump administration and the incoming Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who takes office on December 1.

According to The Post, Mexico would essentially become a "waiting room for America's asylum system," and incoming Mexican government officials have been amenable to the plans, though no formal deal was signed.

"For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico," The Post quoted Sánchez Cordero as saying, adding that it was a "short-term solution."

"The medium- and long-term solution is that people don't migrate," she said. "Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine, one caravan after another after another, that would also be a problem for us."

The deal isn't Trump's first effort to block the caravan migrants from entering the US — he signed an executive order earlier this month barring asylum for migrants who cross the border illegally, though US immigration law explicitly permits migrants to request asylum no matter how they entered the country.

A federal judge blocked Trump's asylum ban earlier this week, arguing that Trump "may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden."

Police fatally shot a man after gunfire broke out at an Alabama mall on Thanksgiving — then conceded he 'likely did not fire' the shots

emantic fitzgerald bradford jr.

  • Alabama police have conceded that the man they fatally shot after gunfire broke out at a mall on Thanksgiving "likely did not fire" the shots.
  • The shooting broke out at a mall in Hoover, Alabama, on Thursday evening and left two people injured.
  • Police say the gunman is still at large.
  • The family of the man fatally shot by police, 21-year-old Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford, Jr., have retained a civil-rights attorney and have vowed to get to the bottom of his death.

Alabama police fatally shot an armed black man on Thanksgiving after gunfire broke out at a mall — but on Friday they said the man they killed "likely did not fire" the shots.

Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford, Jr., 21, was killed by a police officer responding to the Thursday shooting at Hoover's Riverchase Galleria, which left one 18-year-old and one 12-year-old injured.

Hoover police initially said they believed Bradford had shot the older victim, but backtracked the following day and said "he likely did not fire the rounds that injured the 18-year-old victim," Hoover Police Department spokesman Gregg Rector said in a statement.

At least one gunman is still at large

Rector said police still believe Bradford was involved in "some aspect of the altercation" and had a handgun, but that "more than two individuals were involved in the initial altercation."

He added that "at least one gunman" is still at large.

"We regret that our initial media release was not totally accurate, but new evidence indicates that it was not," Rector said.

Protests erupted in Hoover on Saturday, with more than 200 demonstrators marching past the mall, chanting "E.J." and "no justice, no peace,"according to The Associated Press.

Bradford's family have retained a civil-rights attorney, according to CNN, and said in a statement they intend to determine how and why he was killed.

"Our family is completely shocked, heartbroken and devastated at the tragic death of our beloved 'EJ.' EJ was a devoted son and brother, who dedicated his life to serving his country and always doing the right thing," the statement said. "As we continue to grieve, rest assured, that we are working diligently with our legal team to determine exactly what happened and why this police officer killed our son. We will never forget EJ, and ask for your continued prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

Brawl breaks out between Jags and Bills while 2 players wrestle on the ground for the ball in bizarre and wild scene

jags_bills

  • A brawl broke out between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills after a contested catch.
  • As the two teams pushed and shoved, Leonard Fournette ran over to Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson and threw a punch as they went down to the ground, fighting.
  • Meanwhile, Jaguars receiver Donte Moncrief and Bills cornerback Levi Wallace continued to wrestle on the ground for the ball, refusing to give it up.
  • Fournette and Lawson were later ejected.

A wild and ugly scene broke out between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

In the third quarter, Blake Bortles threw a deep, contested pass to wide receiver Donte Moncrief, who came down with the ball with Bills cornerback Levi Wallace clinging onto him.

Referees ruled that Moncrief scored a touchdown, but as both teams raced down the field, some pushing and shoving ensued, followed by a full-on brawl between Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette and Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson.

As Fournette and Lawson swung at each other, with both teams trying to break up the fight, Moncrief and Wallace stayed on the ground, clinging to the ball, refusing to give it up. Nobody seemed to really notice.

Here's a clip of the incident:

Lawson and Fournette were ejected for fighting, while referees also overturned the touchdown, ruling that Moncrief was down just short of the end zone.

As Lawson and Fournette headed back to the locker rooms, they were still yelling at each other.

Fournette was not in the game when the play happened and ran across the field to get involved in the brawl. It's possible that the NFL could fine him further for leaving the bench area to scuffle.

The 50 best-selling music artists of all time, ranked by platinum albums

the beatles

  • In today's music industry, the RIAA certifies an album as "platinum" when it surpasses 1 million album equivalent units in sales or streaming.
  • Here, we rank the best-selling artists of all time by their number of platinum album certifications.

In the decades before streaming-era rules and digital downloads inflated album sales, platinum certification was more difficult for artists to obtain.

When an artist achieved platinum status back then — selling a million or more physical copies of an album — it took a more fervent effort from fans (who had to drive to record stores, find an album, and hand over their hard-earned cash for it), but many acts nonetheless reached platinum certification routinely.

Compiling RIAA data, we ranked the best-selling artists of all time by the number of platinum albums they've sold in the US.

Some of the results here are surprising. Country singer Garth Brooks, for instance, has the most diamond (or 10-times platinum) albums of all time with seven. But the legendary acts at the top of the list are ones you'd expect to see.

Here are the 50 best-selling artists of all time, ranked by platinum albums sold:

The Influencer Marketing Report: Research, strategy & platforms for leveraging social media influencers

This is a preview of the Influencer Marketing (2018) research report from Business Insider Intelligence. To learn more about the top platforms, as well as strategies for social media influencer marketing, click here. Current subscribers can read the report here.

Social Media Influencer Marketing Success Metrics

The concept of a brand hiring a popular personality to promote a product or service isn't new, and brands know that celebrity endorsements can sell products. In the age of social media, however, brands are finding new ways to leverage popular figures as brand ambassadors, and these people aren't necessarily famous actors, singers, or athletes.

How brands are leveraging social media influencer marketing

While brands certainly continue to tap celebrities for endorsement deals, they’re also starting to enlist social media personalities, broadly known as “influencers,” for advertising campaigns. Social influencers generally focus on specific content areas — like fashion, beauty, parenting, or gaming — and cater their content to a specific vertical.

A new report from BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, identifies the ways brands can find and manage relationships with social media influencers. It notes the most engaging industry verticals, the pitfalls to avoid, and the opportunities to cash-in on. Finally, it explores how major social platforms are increasingly building out tools that enable their most popular users to build their personal brands.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:

  • Influencer marketing ad spend is poised to reach between $5 billion and $10 billion in 2022. Taking the midpoint of $7.5 billion as a base case, this represents a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38%.
  • Brands need to fine-balance providing influencers with enough creative freedom, while also ensuring the messaging positively reflects the brand. Nearly 40% of influencers believe that overly restrictive content guidelines are one of the biggest mistakes brands and agencies make when working with them.
  • Influencers tend to have higher user engagement than content generated by brands. The average influencer engagement rate across industry verticals is 5.7%. As a comparison, the average engagement rate for brands on Instagram has fluctuated between 2-3% in the past year.
  • Authenticity is key for influencer marketing messaging. Brands should give influencers sufficient creative freedom to keep posts authentic, as it makes posts less likely to be dismissed by users. Other best practices include repurposing influencer content for multiple platforms, evaluating the audience and following of an influencer, and leveraging data to optimize future campaigns.

 In full, the report:

  • Outlines recent steps the top social platforms are taking for influencer posts.
  • Details the best practices brands should adopt when starting out with influencer marketing.
  • Discusses the top verticals that are poised to benefit the most from influencer marketing, and which ones are growing.
  • Highlights the factors that will be critical for compliance with social platforms and the FTC.

iran iraq earthquake 2017

  • A major 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit western Iran on Sunday night, injuring hundreds of people and sending panicked residents running.
  • Between 300-500 people were reported injured in the quake. No casualties have been reported as of Sunday evening.
  • The earthquake originated 20 km (12.5 miles) southwest of Sarpol-e Zahab, in the Kermanshah Province of Iran close to the Iraq border, which experienced a devastating earthquake this time last year.
  • Iran sits along major fault lines and experiences near daily seismic events.

A major 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit western Iran on Sunday night, injuring hundreds of people and sending panicked residents running into the street.

According to USGS, the earthquake originated 20 km (12.5 miles) southwest of Sarpol-e Zahab, in the Kermanshah Province of Iran close to the Iraq border.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) at around 8:00 p.m. local time. Shallow earthquakes can often cause more broad damage.

Tremors were felt as far away as the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

Hundreds of people have been reported injured in the quake. According to the Associated Press, over 500 people were injured. Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported 387 injured, most of them minor.

All schools and universities in the region were closed on Monday, IRNA said. Roads were temporarily closed and electricity was affected by the quake but they appeared to be back in order by Sunday evening.

Dozens of rescue teams were dispatched to the area, authorities said. Several army units were also called in to assist in rescue efforts.

Iran sits along major fault lines and experiences earthquakes on a near daily basis.

The location of Sunday's quake, Sarpol-e Zahab, was hit with a major 7.3 earthquake last year that killed more than 600 people and left thousands injured and homeless. It was the deadliest earthquake of 2017.

How emerging markets will transform the future of online shopping

This is a preview of a research report from Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about Business Insider Intelligence, click here.

Emerging markets are going to be essential for e-commerce growth, as retailers in developed markets may soon reach saturation in terms of consumer growth.

APAC CAGR

For example, almost half of US households now have a Prime membership, diminishing Amazon's growth potential in the country. Meanwhile, in China, the world's largest e-commerce market, nearly half of the population is actively making online purchases, leaving little room for growth.

However, India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America are worth keeping an eye on. E-commerce penetration rates in these areas hover between 2-6%, presenting a huge opportunity for future growth as online sales gain traction. Moreover, these regions are expected to grow at compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) of 31%, 32%, and 16%, respectively, through 2021.

This report compiles several e-commerce snapshots, which together highlight the most notable emerging markets in various regions. Each provides an overview of the e-commerce industry in a particular country, discusses influential retailers, and provides insights into the opportunities and challenges for that specific domestic industry.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Emerging markets are going to be essential for e-commerce growth, as retailers in developed markets may soon reach saturation in terms of consumer growth.
  • India is the clear overall leader in e-commerce potential, but countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America are also worth keeping an eye on. Within Southeast Asia, Indonesia shows the most promise for retailers, as the government is loosening restrictions on foreign investments, and its massive population is gaining spending power and more access to internet. Meanwhile, Mexico is a retailer's best bet for expansion in Latin America, due to its stable economy and rising middle class, but Brazil may be gearing up to steal the top spot.
  • However, doing business in these regions can be difficult. In most of these emerging markets, infrastructure is underdeveloped and the population is largely unbanked, making digital payments a challenge.
  • If retailers can build a brand presence in these markets while online shopping is still in its nascent stages, they may become market leaders as e-commerce takes off in the regions. Moreover, these markets could provide new sources of growth for companies that would otherwise stagnate in more mature e-commerce markets.

 In full, the report:

  • Explores the e-commerce industry in India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
  • Highlights the leading country in each region, as well as key e-commerce players there.
  • Outlines the challenges and opportunities each region faces.
  • Gives insight into how these emerging markets may shape the future of e-commerce.
